Speaking of André Gorz, there's this great piece he wrote in 1973 about cars that starts off, "The worst thing about cars is that they are like castles or villas by the sea..." It was titled "The Social Ideology of the Motorcar."
Posted by sandwichman at December 8, 2004 02:03 PMThings have gotten much worse since Andre wrote his piece as we are now driving around in weapons of mass destruction aka SUVs. SUVs would be seen as an attempt to regain that sense of privilege engendered by the early motor cars. But since there are now so many SUVs, they have outlived their usefulness.
